Billy Brings Home Another Top 10
Billy Ammons can't stay away from the race
track. His plans for this year are to focus on the Frank Kimmel Enduro
races, but he can't help but come out to South Alabama Speedway for some
short track fun.
Billy borrowed Johnny Otto's #17 Street
Stock car once again, and had a good solid run, coming home in the 6th
spot, after starting 8th in the 25 lap feature.
Also of note, the Ammons Racing crew
brought their Enduro car that they will be running next weekend at Bristol
out to South Alabama for some practice laps. They wanted to shake down the
car before heading up north to the high banks of Bristol. |

Spun Early, but Strong Second for Ammons at
SAS
Billy Ammons started the feature race for the
Street Stocks last Saturday night in the 12th position. A first lap crash
put Billy restarting in 8th. By the end of the first lap after the
restart, Ammons found himself in the 5th spot. On lap four he was 3rd. By
lap nine he was second and bearing down on the leader. That was until he
was spun in turn three on lap 13. He would restart at the tail end of the
field, but would work his way back up to a strong second place finish.

Billy Back in Victory Lane at SAS
It has been over three months since the black
#3 has visited victory lane at South Alabama. That was, until last
Saturday. Billy Ammons drew the pole starting position, and led every lap
en route to his third win of the season. The win wasn't a walk in the park
however, as Billy had to battle a very loose race car in the closing laps.
He was able to hold on the top spot for the victory.

Bad Luck Continues... Blown Motor for Billy
The monkey is still on Billy Ammons' back.
After starting in the 6th position for last Saturday's 25 lap Street Stock
feature, Ammons' engine let go. At the time, he was having a very strong
run, and looked to have a shot at the checkers. The team will try to get
the car readied for the big 75 lap Street Stock Madness race coming up on
August 18th.

Up and Down Night - 2nd Place Finish for
Ammons
Sixteen cars pulled into the pits this past
Saturday night for the 25 lap Street Stock feature. Only five cars
finished the race, which had a high attrition rate. Billy Ammons started
fourth in the feature, but a first lap incident would take out the second
place starter, moving Billy up to the outside pole.
Billy would have a strong run until being spun
in turn three with 9 laps to go. He would manage to fight his way back up
to cross the line 3rd, but a post race disqualification of the race winner
would move him up to a second place finishing position. |

Another Solid Top 5 For Billy at SAS
The Street Stock division had a special 40 lap
feature June 16. Billy Ammons, always one of the favorites, again
struggled through the night, but came home with a strong top five. Billy
got involved in a first lap accident that rendered his #3 machine with
some suspension damage. He managed to overcome the damage to take the lead
from Jody Henderson on lap 21, and looked poised for victory. On lap 27,
however, Billy's right from tire gave way. He would have to surrender the
lead to come in and change tires. He still managed to work his way back up
through the field to take home fifth. |

Billy Borrows a Top Five Finish at SAS
Misfortune has been the story of the
season thus far for the Billy Ammons Racing crew. The bad luck continued
Saturday night, as Billy's engine blew early in practice. Billy managed to
wheel a borrowed car from Johnny Otto to finish in the top five and
maintain his position in the points. This marks the fourth different
car that Billy has driven this season, including his primary car, backup
car, and two borrowed cars; one from Shanky Smith, and one from Johnny
Otto. Next week at SAS, is a special 50 lap race paying $1000 to win for
the Street Stock division.

Billy Finishes Fifth... in the #17 Car?
To say Billy Ammons had a rough night
this past Saturday night would be an understatement. The Street
Stock division had the chance to qualify for the first time on the
new pavement at South Alabama Speedway. Everyone on hand had track
record on their minds.
Unfortunately for Billy, his shot at
a track record will have to wait. On his first qualifying lap
something broke in the front end of the #3 machine as he exited turn
4. This lead to Billy slamming into the outside wall, and narrowing
the car by about three inches. Physically, Billy was uninjured.
Emotionally, he was not a happy camper, as evidenced by him climbing
out of the car to survey the damage.
His night was seemingly finished at
that point. That was, until the Shanky Racing team stepped up to the
plate and offered to let Billy use their car. The Shanky Racing guys
rushed to Troy to get the car from the shop, where it had been
sitting since the Rattler in March. This is the same car that Shanky
drove to the 2005 Street Stock Championship.
They got the car back to the track in
time to get Billy strapped in for the feature, but did not have time
to put a setup in the car. Billy muscled the car from his 10th place
starting spot to take home a fifth place finish.
Thanks to the generosity of the
Shanky Racing team, Billy will still have a shot to defend his
Street Stock championship at South Alabama Speedway. |

Billy Ammons managed to overcome a false
penalty to come home with a third place finish this past Saturday night.
Billy lined up on the grid 5th, but wound up starting at the tail end of
the field after being called for jumping the initial start of the race.
By lap 3 Billy had already moved his way to
the top five. On lap 15 Billy spun to avoid an accident, and was awarded
his position back. He would fight with Jeff Rudd for the remainder of the
race and come home with a solid third place finish.
During post race video review, track
officials found Billy did not in fact jump the initial start. Officials
appoligized to the #3 crew, who understood mistakes can be made.
Billy will be back in action on May 5th at
South Alabama Speedway

Billy Ammons started
3rd this past Saturday night for the Street Stock feature at South
Alabama Speedway. He quickly showed he was the car to beat, until
his car started leaking fuel. The black flag came out for the #3
machine, and Billy came down pit road to fix the issue.
A quickie caution was called for by
track officials, and Billy rejoined the race half a lap down as the
leaders were prepared to take the green.
Billy, still with the fastest car on
the track managed to work his way up to a top five finish. |

Billy Ammons put on
a great show for the South Alabama Speedway fans last Saturday night
coming from the back to take the checkers in an exciting finish in
the 25 lap Street Stock Feature.
Billy started near the back of the
pack, and patiently worked his way to the front. By the time he got
up to second spot, race leader Jeff Rudd had pulled to nearly a
straightaway advantage.
Within about five short laps Ammons
was able to track down the white #17 of Rudd, and found himself
right on Rudd's tail with just a couple laps remaining. Rudd
protected the low line, not allowing Ammons to get past him on the
bottom of the race track. Ammons made an attempt to pass on the
outside in turn three on one occasion, but was unable to make the
car stick.
As the two came to the white flag,
Rudd continued to protect the low line. Ammons followed him into
turn one right on his tail. Ammons got a good run coming off of turn
two and was able to get his nose under Rudd as the two came to turn
three. Rudd slid up the racetrack and Ammons was able to get by and
take the checkers with the fans all on their feet. |

Rattler Weekend did
not turn out quite as well as the team had hoped, as bad luck struck
the #3 team again. In the few weeks leading up to the Rattler, Billy
had two rear ends break on him in practice.
Billy started 14th for the 50 lap
Street Stock feature at South Alabama Speedway, and had worked his
way up to 10th by the end of lap 1. Billy's car was handling great
as he worked his way up to the front. Billy fought hard and clawed
his way up to the fifth position by lap four.
Then, the first round of bad luck
struck while attempting to pass the #17 of Jeff Rudd. The two
touched and Rudd went spinning in turn three. As per South Alabama
Speedway rules, both cars were ordered to restart the race at the
rear of the field.
Billy shook off the incident, and
started to climb his way back through the field once more. The
second round of bad luck hit on lap 40 as the #3 machine had a brake
rotor break, ending Billy's night. Billy's official finish position
would be 11th. |

The Billy Ammons
Racing crew headed up to Birmingham International Raceway this past
weekend for the Earlybird 200. He finished fourth in the qualifying
heat race on February 24, and started third in the 20 lap feature on
the 25th. He was involved in an early first lap incident, which
caused minor damage to the #3 machine, but he managed to fight back
and come home with a 5th place finish. The crew is now getting ready
for this coming weekend's Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway! |

Billy capped of his 2006 Street Stock
Championship season by finishing qualifying and finishing a strong
second Saturday night. The second place finish ends a perfect podium
season for 2006 at SAS for Billy. Billy has driven the #3 machine to
a top three finish in each and every race this season en route to
the track championship. |

Billy came from the
back to the front for the second straight week to take his sixth
victory of the season. Sam "Shanky" Smith led the first 23 laps as
Billy worked his way patiently through the field. Suddenly, under
caution on lap 23 Smith pulled down pit road, relinquishing the lead
to Billy. Pitts Motorsports
will team up with Billy Ammons Racing during the Snowball Derby
weekend at Five Flags Speedway. Billy Ammons will drive the Buddy
Pitts owned #26x Super Stock car in the 75 lap Super Stock feature.
"Billy has run
Super Stocks before and has the talent to put this car up front. I
look forward to working with Billy and his team." said Pitts.
"I am very
excited and feel this is going to be the best opportunity me and my
team have to be competitive." said Ammons. |
